The highest honor offered by the American Advertising Federation, the Silver Medal Award is a national recognition given at the local level. It was established in 1959 to honor professionals who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's standards, achieving creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

About Jim Reyland

Jim and Debbie Reyland were married in Charlotte, NC in 1984 and immediately moved to Nashville for Debbie’s job opportunity. Moving without a gig, but as the undisputed, “Husband of the year,” Jim found work hosting talk shows on WLAC, doing voice-overs and on camera commercials.

Jim said, “The on camera commercial thing would eventually provide representation at The William Morris Agency in New York, the accumulation of countless airline miles, all in a failed attempt to sell Pringles and Nyquil to the world.”

Before Audio and NYC, Jim had spent his days applying to every ad agency and production company, TV station and record label in Nashville. No luck. Until, he met Jim Gilmore and they continued Jim’s dream of having a business that supported the creativity of all of the places he had wanted to be a part of, a studio business, Audio Productions, whose focus was creatives.

“If I couldn’t work as one, maybe they’d let me hang out with them.” Jim told us. “The thing is, I’ve always wanted to be like them. The thrill of a great idea. The pressure of a deadline. The place you go when that idea and the pressure come together for a successful ad campaign, or an Addy, or a, ‘Your commercials make me laugh,’ comment from the neighbor cutting the grass. The special talent that makes something out of nothing, and moves the needle.”

After NYC, Jim realized that the time and effort seeking the spotlight was being wasted. So he turned the light away from self, trashed his headshots, fired his agents and directed his attention to creative and social justice pursuits.

I had already been working with Father Strobel starting in 1986 with my church as part of the Room in the Inn crew. So I began teaching a class at the Campus with Charlie Strobel called, ‘Life Stories’. I worked with Johnny Ellis, my friend who had long battled addiction and homelessness, on a new direction for his life. Wrote STAND about our experiences. Started Writer’s Stage, a nonprofit built to tour plays like STAND to colleges and high schools across the country. Until Covid, the STAND cast, featuring Chip Arnold and the legendary Barry Scott, performed STAND over 300 times from coast to coast for many thousands of students.”

Jim has been the theater writer for Nashville Arts Magazine. He studied English Literature at Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, NC and was a Radio Talk Show host and producer at WBT, Charlotte, NC. He is the Artistic Director of Writer’s Stage Nashville, TN, the founder and 35-year owner of Audio Productions INC and author of a dozen plays and musicals, including the award-winning play STAND, and a new musical, I’LL TAKE THE CROWD. He has written three self-published books, [HANDMADE] Friendships Famous, Infamous, Real, and Imagined. RACING BETWEEN STOP SIGNS. Musings on Creativity and a novel, GUYS ONLY (GIRLS KEEP OUT).

Jim defines himself as a Homeless advocate, Room in the Inn volunteer, brother of six, husband of one, and father of two; the wonderful Maggie and Emily Reyland.

Co-Art Directors of the Year

Philip “Flip” Holsinger

Philip “Flip” Holsinger is an American photojournalist and writer reporting in the immersive style of Tom Wolfe's New Journalism. He has lived and worked in some of the world's most notorious regions recording the intimate lives of people and nations - living for a time with Buddhist monks in Thailand, with rebel soldiers in the jungle of Nicaragua and the warlords of Haiti, and traveling with nomadic shepherds in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia (where he was fired upon by rebel snipers).

His work has appeared in major publications and broadcasts, including CNN, NBC Nightly News, The New York Times, Cincinnati Enquirer, and National Geographic Online. His contracts have included The United Nations, The Republic of Haiti, The Republic of Kosovo, and the U.S. Senate. He has also authored three books of photojournalism and two collections of poetry.

Tom Davis

Tom Davis has been an award-winning art director, lead designer and creative director in the Nashville and Franklin area for over 25 years, building identities and helping reinvent brands across all marketing channels and platforms. He has worked as Senior Art Director for The Buntin Group, Creative Director for Hammock Publishing and SouthComm Communications, Design Director for Athlon Media Group, Senior Design Director for Lonely Planet, and as lead Art Director and Designer on projects for The Brand Hotel.

Tom’s design and art direction skills have been featured in a variety of high-profile Brand Hotel assignments, including the agency’s work on Nashville’s Amazon HQ2 pitch for the Nashville Chamber which ultimately brought the company’s East Coast logistics hub to town; identity and grand opening projects for the new Tennessee State Museum; and the agency’s city-wide We Are Nashville initiative. Tom studied Visual Arts and Industrial Design at Auburn University and earned his BFA in Graphic Design from O’More College of Design.

Jonathan Frazier

Jonathan Frazier is both a freelance filmmaker and the Creative Director at Soundstripe. He has spent the last decade getting to partner with culture-shaping brands, artists, and nonprofits all over the globe. Whether filming out of the back of a tuk tuk, tackling venture-backed creative briefs, or traveling with the world’s biggest stars, his ability to connect quickly and deeply with his subjects bolsters the empathy driven approach he has become known for.

Lindsey Frazier

Lindsey Frazier is a poet, memoirist, and mental health blogger. Her writing has been published in Wildflowers magazine, Nashville Poets Quarterly, and a YouVersion devotional titled Oh Love, Come Close. When she’s not writing (or helping make her husband look good), she keeps busy nurturing and empowering their three children, wrangling the two family dogs, and keeping that darn betta fish alive.

Sam is an award-winning creative leader with 20 years of experience and demonstrated effectiveness guiding and developing creative executions of TV and online advertising campaign efforts. He brings a broad range of expertise, with a skill set spanning the gamut of 365º consumer and B2B marketing. In his current role, Sam is SVP, Creative Director at Barkley, in Kansas City.

Mike Fetrow

Executive Creative Director
Fame, Minneapolis, MN

Mike started his career as part of the core creative team in a small Minneapolis boutique, Hunt Murray. From there he created award-winning work at Fallon for brands like Cadillac, Coca-Cola, Miller Light, and the “Stay Smart,” campaign for Holiday Inn Express. After a sting at Saatchi & Saatchi, Mike returned to Minneapolis and co-founded the agency OneAndAll serving clients like Lifetime Fitness and Culvers.

During the last decade, Mike helped lead Minneapolis’ largest digital agency (space150) and also lead the creative reinvention of two of the cities largest agencies (Colle McVoy and Olson). Always immersed in the creative community, he also started a free creative school program where he mentored aspiring creatives, and co-founded a popular charity event, The ShirtShow. During it’s run, TheShirtShow was able to contribute thousands of dollars to FreeArts of MN.

Mike is currently leading efforts to reposition Fame from a retail-only agency to a strategic experiential marketing and branding agency. He also hopes to launch a non-profit, social activation effort called, Participant in 2021 (beaparticipant.com).

Abby Fitch

Abby Fitch is an Associate Creative Director with Adventure™ in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has 15+ years experience in PDF downloading, google doc creating, and water cooler replacing. When there’s time, she works on creative strategy, branding, art direction, and illustration for clients specializing in active lifestyle brands.

Christopher Gyorgy

Freelancer, Evanston, IL

Christopher is a twenty-year advertising veteran who’s developed multi-platform branding campaigns for clients like Ford, HP, Sony, Sears, Maserati, Kraft, SC Johnson, Toyota, Pepsi, Citibank and Budweiser. He’s done stints and held leadership positions at several agencies including Leo Burnett, FCB, BBDO, The Martin Agency, David & Goliath, Saatchi, Y&R, Goodby Silverstein, and Havas. His work has been recognized by Communication Arts, The One Show, Archive, New York Art Directors Club and Cannes Lions. He lives in Evanston, Illinois with his wife, four children, and dog.

Jim Mathis

Jim Mathis has been involved in advertising literally all his life. His father worked in the industry, so he grew up in and around ad agencies and graphic design firms. For more than 30 years he has worked in just about every facet of the advertising business from design and copywriting to marketing strategies, media placement and television production. His client list has included everything from the local carwash and farmers’ market to national brands like McDonald’s, and Sprint.

Over the years, Jim has probably judged more ADDY shows than you have entered. With more than 45 local and district American Advertising Awards competitions under his belt, he’s still thrilled and inspired by the work he sees in markets big and small.

In 1999, Jim started ADwërks, Inc. where he is Certified AdvertologistTM. He and his team handcraft marketing communications solutions and strategies for a variety of local, regional, and national business-to-consumer accounts.

Teddy Shipley

Group Creative Director
HMH Advertising, Charlotte, NC

Teddy believes the ideas get better as the air gets thinner, but that's mostly because he’s weirdly tall. What he really believes is that truly great ideas are rooted in just that, truth. For more than 15 years, Teddy has applied his art and creative direction skills to develop award-winning campaigns for everything from truckers to tenors, resorts to refinancing. Subway Restaurants, Daimler, Mercedes Benz Financial, Crescent Communities, Maaco, Spectrum, Ally Bank and Metlife are just some of the clients that Teddy has enjoyed telling truths for over the years.

About the Award

Each year the AAF Nashville Scholarship foundation awards a $500 scholarship to a student that shows extreme promise as a soon to be member of our professional industry. The award is given to the highest scoring, non-senior entrant in our Student American Advertising Awards competition. This year’s Rising Star Award goes to Maggie Strahle, a student at Middle Tennessee State University. We can’t wait to see what you accomplish, Maggie. Congratulations!
